Overview
“Manufacturing Consciousness” presents two characters engaging in dynamic, AI-generated dialogue within a minimalist digital simulation set on the virtually reclaimed site of Three Mile Island. Drawing inspiration from Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky’s seminal critique, “Manufacturing Consent,” this artwork investigates the subtle yet pervasive ways corporate narratives influence collective perception.
Character Design
One character, driven by corporate enthusiasm and techno-optimism, promotes a seemingly flawless future defined by technological advancement and corporate innovation while gleaming over the ethical complexities. The other, embodying historical skepticism and existential awareness, critically examines the ethical implications and systemic consequences underlying such utopian promises grounded in historical perspectives. Through their dynamic and satirical exchanges, the work questions our uncritical acceptance of corporate narratives, technological utopianism, and sanitized histories.
Framing
Ultimately, “Manufacturing Consciousness” underscores the absurdity and inherent contradictions in powering artificial intelligence and digital progress through means—such as the resurrection of nuclear facilities—that prioritize corporate interests and profit margins at the expense of ecological sustainability and planetary wellbeing.
